Animal Chiropractic

Animal chiropractic focuses on the health and function of the neuromusculoskeletal system, using hands on techniques to assess and adjust the joints of the animal. While commonly known as the "back person", chiropractors can treat much more than just the spine of the animal, and treatment affects the whole body.

Chiropractic adjustments are high velocity, low amplitude thrusts applied in a specific way with the aim of restoring function and mobility into a joint that has become restricted. When a joint becomes restricted, the nerves signals can be affected which leads to decreased mobility, muscular tension, stiffness, pain and even organ dysfunction.

Because the focus is on getting the joints moving as well as they can, chiropractic is not just for injured or lame animals; it can increase performance and enable optimal function of the joints, nerves, muscles and other soft tissues as well as organ function. This all allows better stance, mobility and flexibility which makes it an ideal consideration for animals of all ages.

What to expect at your animal's appointment

detailed history will be taken to gain all relevant information. Your chiropractor will then watch your animal walk and trot to see how they move, looking for any movement patterns which would indicate tightness or restrictions. This will not be performed if your animal is unable to do so, in the instance of lameness or injury requiring restricted movement.

Your animal will then be examined using static and motion palpation, and adjusted where there are areas of concern. Where relevant, your equipment may be looked at to assess for correct fit, including saddle and bridle fit, collars, harnesses and rugs. Please note saddle check is for general fit and does not fulfil the role of a saddle fitter - for this I recommend RS Saddles who covers this area.
